View Full Version : Linfield's right-back position
At right-back we have two players vying for the spot:
Ervin - seen to be more reliable than Dougie, however lacks that something 'special', can get stuck in, gets up the wing and gets decent crosses in, can be prone to getting caught out of position quite often and short range passing can be off-target.
Douglas - our most unpredictable player, can end up man of the match with great work down the wing with excellent crosses, and good defending, however can also have a day where he looks far off IL standard, missing tackles, bad crosses, getting caught out etc.
A new RB perhaps?
(my opinion only!)

i like Jimbo, but i think our style of play makes him look bad, ie constantly punting the ball into the channels. Maybe when fergie hangs the boots up our style will change slightly and allow more ball on the deck football

Dougie for me, he can be erratic but on his day I feel he offers more than Jimbo, who offers a very strong backup.

Both wee Wee Jimbo and Dougie are hard not to like in person. However for me we need a new first choice RB.
Jimbo OR Dougie would do as back up.

this post is spot on imo, people know where i stand on this one, hoofing the ball up the pitch isnt jims style and maybe as jason stated when spike hangs the boots up are style will change, when we get the ball on the deck we destroy teams and defenders cant cope with the pace we have up front in peter and tommy, when full backs go forward and join the attack midfielders are supposed to cover, and i dont want to be seen to be makin excuses for jim but the right hand side of midfield needs to and more protection, this also applys to aidy when going forward, jim for me :D and dougie is excellent cover and both players should remain as linfield players:D

A new one to give Jim competition and improve him.
I've seen Dougie's charges forward or loss of concentration too many times now.

I think Ervin is much more consistent whereas Douglas makes costly silly mistakes. However Douglas is a better footballer. I think both players are probably the best right sided full backs currently in the League.

but on the right back issue ... Douglas.
As for Damron suggesting that once spike hangs up his boots, Ervin will improve due to his footballing ability..... lol :laughing

Dougie is an idiot and doesn't have the brains to play football. After his display of hoofing in the first half, running about like a headless chicken in the second half against Limavady and his sending off (which i was predicting at half time), he should never play for Linfield again.
Ervin is not brilliant but i have lost count of the number of times his pace as bailed out the slowest defence in the league. For this reason he must stay in until a suitable replacement is found.

Limavady? Don't you mean stute? The game in which he was one of our best players in the first half?

sorry, stute is correct and i thought he was are worst player in the first half. Every ball he hit was a long ball.

Douglas in 1st half v Institute was best he has been in some time. His crossing when he gets it right is best in league in that position.
Defensively I used to think Ervin had it till we played Crues in cup final and that 4 foot kid beat Ervin in the air to set up one of their goals since then I havnt understood how he stayed in team so long.
Also Douglas everytime we play the Glens marks Hamilton and imo has done a better job than anyone else in the league has in past 2 seasons.

i recall douglas being the worst player in the team the last time we played the glens, boxing day was the worst game he has ever had in a blue shirt imo, hamilton drifts out to the left handside to get a free one against douglas:D

Hardly fair to say he was worst in the team, Bailie I recall having a complete nightmare trying to deal with Hamilton a few times.
Also the argument about Ervin's football improving when Spike retires is nonsense, Ervin cant find a Blueman from 5yards away!! Worst passer at club but on his day probably defensively the best.
Ideal solution - Ervin's defensive ability, Dougie's throws and heading but we're still sunk for someone to consistantly pass the ball to a member of his own team.
Wouldn't say Ervin is the best defender at the club, too often gets the offside trap wrong, often completely out of sync with the rest of the defence

Well personally I would have Douglas everytime so was just trying to give an unbias viewpoint on both players. Ervin can on his day be good others he is awful, never seems to take same abuse as what Douglas gets though! And yes I no Douglas can have shockers but they dont come as often as Ervins. Only my opinions though.

Wheres all the Polls especially all the female wans lol.
I went for Jim for 1 reason, he passes the ball to feet, well most of the time. Dougie hoofs the ball in what ever direction he is facing most of the time.

Well after last night I think it has only convinced me more, Douglas for right back.
Oh and Ervin does pass the ball to feet, only it tends to be 5 yards away and at the feet of a player in the other team.

with jim picking up that injry i feel dougie has to stay but could maybe also see dj going out and bringing in another right back as cover, or maybe promoting one of the swifts.
that lad from coleraine that west brom are meant to be looking at is meant to be a good player possibly worth a look at ?

anyone apart from dougie .... please no more of the dougster....... he just cant control his feet........
when jim gets back to full fitness he will be number 1 for a very long time, some people forget he is still only 23 and will still get better.dougie is a good lad and great back up but he still gives me bad nerves it seems to be head down HOOF!jim gets a lot of abuse as well as you can see when you read this thread but the sooner all blueman get behind whoever is at right back the better.

I agree.
I think most people know where i stand on Dougie, just dont think he should be at Linfield.
Get jim back to fitness and him, Hagan and BJB can all fight it out for RB, and im afraid show Dougie the door. Thats my opinion.
