Linfield got their Premier League campaign off to a winning start with a jaded performance against Newry. The bad news of the day is the apparent injury to Michael Gault who had a hospital visit immediately following his departure from the field with a suspected back injury, heres hoping hes okay.
Linfield started with an unfamiliar 4-3-3 formation with Spike, Carvill and Downey up front, many will wonder why he didnt just slot Downey into a more familiar central midfield position to fill the hole left by Maccers.
The breaththrough came midway through the second half, with new boy John Martin impressing on his league debut with his first goal and nearly securing a second soon after.
It was a shoddy performance with not many chances, possibly impressing most on the day was Billy Joe Burns playing at right-back who showed brains on the ball and made some good runs up the line. He even had a clever shot from outside of the area that just missed the post.
In hindsight, some advice for DJ, 4-4-2. Stick to what the players are best at, if they were intelligent enough to play weird and wonderful formations they'd be over in Engand.
